A Bovine Fantasia

How now, cow
You are brown
Or black
Or even moo of blue
There is no verigation
In your pigmentation
Your single hue
Is pleasing to the eye
Standing stark against the sky
You, rumen true,
Do but chew
Converting grass of green
To nectar white
Which passes then to local cheeseries
Where Kelly, of hair color light,
Does regale with tales of muenster, swiss and cheddars all
Until we, few merry band,
Do pretentiously munch from mouth to hand.

– Bryan

Lodge Sonnet: A Tete-a-tete
Between Pheasants,
One Worried, the Other Not

They’re blind! – squawked Fred’rick – gullet flushed of hope.
That walls that in iced days release their scent
Of slaught’rous beast should in summer not scope
Our urge to preen and plash. O joy is rent!

Hang on, says Murray. I seen this gaggle.
I heard ‘em come; you won’t believe their story.
We know rifle butts, but malmsey? A bag’ll
Cheer ‘em – if it’s got brie instead of quarry.

You see they brought no dogs? I heard one say
They couldn’t kennel theirs, not knowing whether
He’d feel lonely. When they say “game”, they mean play,
Not us! Brykus? Gowns? Don’t ruffle a feather.

Thus Fred’rick warbled odes: ’Tis this I wished!
Till he, by a misthrown water balloon, was squished.

I love “I Hate Haikus” … has my vote.

OK- let’s work up a system here… first we can eliminate the worst one… that would be… WAIT… where’s mine? Did I neglect to… DOH! OK, so eliminate mine. Done! (Todo’s 2010: write a poem.) Now it gets much more difficult. I confess true fondness for each of these entries. No, I’m not running for office. I just think you have to respect the use of “ta-tas”- haven’t heard that expression since the sixties. And the sonnet for its sheer technical tour de forced. And that words can stimulate a smell reaction is proved in the juxtaposition of “gangrene” and “moccasin” so proximate to “lacerated”- PLUS this one humble verse covers the waterfront of Greek, Latin and Native American etymologies. (Sadly no proto-Indo-European tho.) And the FTD card for it’s sweet ambiguity and ability to stay on-topic within the confines of a “ku”. Speaking of Kus, Ku-dohs! to Alex for caving in and writing one- and with a turn of phrase that captures an essence of Weekend (and much of life in general): “stupid little pointless things”. But in the end it is my fondness for all things cheese that sways me to cast mine vote for A Bovine Fantasia. Thank you all for playing.

Each year, I reflect on Bryan’s entry and dispair at my lack of talent. I wish there was some way of showcasing a lack of talent.

Anyway, I’m shopping around an anthology of Bryan’s WwW work I’ve compiled. Any suggestions for a grabby title would be appreciated. Bob’s U-Publish is very interested.

    I vote The Lodge Sonnet

Mike’s analysis is spot on, but he comes to the wrong conclusion–my vote is for the simplicity, directness and relevancy of the Gownku–plus it has the extra added bonus of being a complete surprise entry complete with mismatched ‘Congrats Grad’ celebatory ballon.
